As part of October’s Health Literacy Month, Northern NSW Local Health and North Coast Primary Health Network are holding free community workshops to help people take better care of their health.
Each workshop will be held from 10.00-11.00am followed by a light lunch.

- Casino - Tuesday 17 October, Casino RSM
- Ballina - Thursday 19 October, Ballina District Hospital Education Centre
- Grafton- Wednesday 25 October, Grafton District Services Club
- Kingscliff - Friday 27 October, Kingscliff Beach Bowls Club
- Lismore - Tuesday 31 October, Lismore Workers Club
Participants will be helped to find reliable health information online - use their online My Health Record - learn some tips and tricks for managing chronic conditions - prepare questions to bring to their next health care appointment - take a free brief health check - ask questions of the health professionals at the workshop.
They will also have the chance to take part in the first ever health literacy survey in the region.
“This will give us valuable insight into the health information needs of our community,” the LHD says.
“Health literacy is people’s ability to access, understand and act on health information. Up to 80% of health information is forgotten as soon as we leave the doctor’s rooms.
We know that by working on health literacy we can support people to leave health appointments with the information they need to stay healthy and at home.”
The workshops are open to individuals and community organisations.
